You Can’t Have The Same Good Time That You’ve Already Had☟
Writing today with the end of summer, back to school blues/jitters. Today I’ll welcome a new crop of students to my classroom and then take all of our 9th graders on a two night class trip out towards Mt. Hood. Always feel a lot of pressure to have something heady/big to share with students on the first day. Never comes out how I imagine it. Start of the school year can be a bit awkward but there’s no way around it.
Truth be told I’m still riding a high from my recent east coast run and missing the road. Connected/re-connected with so many beautiful people and am so grateful to everyone who came out/bought something/said hello or helped in any capacity. Remember - you can’t have the same good time that you’ve already had. Here’s to what’s next.
Conversations with Kevin Morby + Julia Jacklin☟
Published two interviews for the Creative Independent this month. First was Kevin Morby. I’ve been lucky to connect with Kevin a handful of times over the years and have long admired his work ethic. I always walk away with a new perspective on songwriting after we hang up the phone. Our recent talk centered on living inside your work, the benefits of boredom, and the importance of having DIY roots. Next up was Julia Jacklin, a musician who my wife turned me onto (thanks Sunny). I was blown away by a live performance here in Portland and was eager to speak with Julia ahead of the release of Pre Pleasure, her latest for Polyvinyl Records. Easily one of my favorite interviews to date. Julia spoke to protecting your definition of success, making a living as an artist and being/feeling like yourself. Check out both conversations here.
Guest Mixes - Summerland + Soho Radio☟
Got a couple of guest mixes for you this month. Summerland Ceramics make small batches of hand-made ceramic bongs, pipes, and accessories in Northern California designed by the ritual of connecting with nature. We’ve been using the Pleasure Point bong for a few years now at home. Highly recommend. Ahead of my east coast tour, I put together ‘Travelin’ Light,’ a mix of some of my favorite summer road trip jams. Listen here.
Joe Harvey-Whyte is a London based multi-instrumentalist and composer specializing in Pedal Steel, Lap Steel, Dobro and Guitar. My buddy Bobby Lee turned me onto his session work + solo releases and I have been paying attention ever since. Joe hosts a great show on Soho Radio and asked me to pick some tunes for the latest episode. Listen here.
Headcleaner - August 2022☟
Headcleaner is a playlist series just for newsletter subscribers (that’s you!) compiled of every song I’ve shared to my IG stories over the past month. Jams aplenty this go round. Hope you find something you dig. Here is your August playlist.
