Being On The Road is Quite a Feeling☟
Still riding an enormous high from being on the road for two weeks. Came home with a renewed sense of energy and an excitement about music that I haven’t had in a long time. A huge thank you is in order to everyone who made this run a huge success. Music is love. Photo by Roberto Johnson.
Spring Live Performances☟
Lots more live performances on the horizon here in the Pacific Northwest. Really looking forward to doing a weekend run with my old Baltimore friends Smoke Bellow + getting to open up for Widowspeak (go listen to their new album immediately) in May. Below is where you can find me this spring. Flyer by Sunny Eckerle.
+ 4.22 - Portland, Oregon - Firkin Tavern w/ Smoke Bellow + Maria DeHart
+ 4.23 - Seattle, Washington - Conor Byrne Tavern w/ Smoke Bellow + Coral Grief (tickets)
+ 5.6 - Portland, Oregon - Polaris Hall w/ Widowspeak + Sylvie (tickets)
April DJ Sets☟
Picked up a bunch of great records on the road (shoutout to Groove Merchant in SF and Warbler Records in Santa Barbara) and am stoked to be back on the decks in April. Art by Dan Wilson. Here’s where I’ll be spinning this month in PDX:
+ 4.8 - Dig A Pony (Happy Hour Set 5-8pm)
+ 4.10 - Either/Or (Brunch Set 930am-1230pm)
+ 4.17 - Mad Hanna (Saloon Sundays 4:30-7pm)
A conversation with Mikey Coltun (Mdou Moctar)☟
Mikey Coltun is a musician, producer, and engineer living in New York City. He plays bass with Mdou Moctar, Oumou Sangare, Steve Gunn, Sessa, Cheick Hamala Diabate, Les Rhinoceros, and Yonatan Gat’s and Dvorak Quartet. Was a real treat to catch up with Mikey over zoom last month for The Creative Independent. You can read our full conversation here and be sure to look out for upcoming Mdou Moctar tour dates near you - truly one of the best live bands right now.
Guest Mix - Be Your Own Drum Circle☟
Be your own drum circle is a free association research project based in PDX that explores the space between isolation (meditation) and togetherness (group dynamics, cults), ecstatic experiences (drugs, meditation) and mundane practice (sobriety, chores). Put together a ‘mystic alpinism’ guest mix to correlate with their latest merch drop. Featuring Ben Chasny, Izzy Johnson, Jerry Garcia/Sanjay Mishra + more. Listen here.
